It is said that Peshwas Sawai Madhavrao had a dream in which Lord Rama appeared to him and asked to build a temple in his name. The temple was constructed with black stones brought from the river bank of Godavari at Ramkund which is located opposite to the temple. The temple is dedicated to Lord Rama and His consorts, Sita and Laxman. The first person to perform the worship at the temple was Ramanavami Raja, a king of Nasik who established a huge and artistically sculpted image of Lord Rama according to Hindu mythology. During the worship, a gold crown was offered to the Lord Rama which is still preserved in the inner sanctum of the temple. Each year, on the day of Ramanavami, a grand festival is organized at the temple which is attended by devotees from all across the country. In 2009, the celebrations of the Ramanavami festival, that marks the birth of Lord Rama, was of particularly great importance to commemorate 250 years of the temple.
